Welcome to Llangollen

Llangollen takes it’s name from a 7th century monk named Collen, who settled here to spread the Christian message.  Today Llangollen attracts many  holiday makers who enjoy it’s  walks, ranging from a stroll besides Thomas Telford’s Canal, to the steep climb up to Dinas Brân Castle, a Welsh castle built on the site of a prehistoric hill fort around the late 13th century. Other places of interest include Plas Newydd, a black and white house set in lovely grounds and made famous by the Ladies of Llangollen. There is the steam railway that winds itself through the vale and of course the tea shops were you can enjoy a slice of real Welsh Bara Brith. One of the most famous things in Llangollen is the bridge spanning the River Dee. The first  stone bridge was built in 1345 but there are some   references   to a bridge as  far  back  as 1284. In 1873  whilst  widening the bridge, pieces of tombstones with Latin inscriptions were  found. They are thought to have come from Valle Crucis Abbey founded in 1200, which can be found just outside town on the approach to the Horseshoe Pass. The bridge was once described as one of the seven wonders of Wales. Another wonder of Wales is it’s love of music which is reflected in Llangollen having it’s own International Musical Eisteddfod. This was started just after the Second World War to promote peace and harmony between nations, through music. For many however, peace is found in simply enjoying lunch or an ice cream beside the River Dee, watching the water flowing by. Unfortunately our busy lives mean that this peace does not last very long but have you ever thought about everlasting peace?

Our greatest need is to have a true and lasting peace with God our maker, but sadly our sins prevent us from knowing such  peace. Amazingly however, the Bible tells us that Jesus Christ, came  into  the   world to make peace possible.  It was on the cross that Jesus gave his life and in so doing paid the penalty for our sins.   When we  truly believe Jesus did this for us, reconciliation and peace with God  becomes a reality and we receive the gift of eternal life.  We
hope you have received a warm welcome from the people of the peaceful Vale of Llangollen but we pray you will also know what it is to welcome Jesus Christ into your heart and the everlasting  peace he brings to all who believe.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
John Chapter 3 verse 16.

Jesus said to his disciples and all who trust in him...“My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid”
John Chapter 14 verse 27
